Urumqi


 

  

1.Brief Introduction
Located at the foot of the snow-capped Tianshan Mountain Range, Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest of China. Covering an area of 12, 000 sq km (about 2,965,262 acres),It is famous as the last stopover along the" Silk Road".
The region attracts many adventurous travelers as the resourcefully rich and ethnically diverse, Xinjiang contains the driest, hottest and coolest spots in China. The longest inland river, the Tarim River is here
Urumqi actually means "beautiful pasture" in Mongolian. For over two thousand years, the area around Urumqi has been lush pasture populated by many minorities who herded sheep and cattle.
2.Local Culture
As the minority is Muslim, pork is rare in Xinjiang. Only Han Chinese eats pork here. It is therefore, important to remember to respect this tradition.
3.Shopping and Food
Urumqi is a great place to pick up some interesting craft items like ethnic clothing, embroidery, and jewelry. Other handicrafts include jade carvings, Kashgar carpets, exotic knives, wood crafts, and ethnic musical instruments. All of the above items make Urumqi a fun place to shop for something a little special.
Culinary culture here is rich and unique.The local ethnic food and snacks are very tasty and very hot. Xinjiang cuisine is really good at the preparation of mutton and Mutton Kebabs are popular throughout China. Other typical Xinjiang dishes include Lamian noodles, Nang bread, and Uygur rice.
4.Entertainment
Night market is very popular, both for local people and tourists. You can find most of the delicious snacks here. Just enjoy it!
5.Transportation
The Urumqi airport is 15km from the city. Daily domestic connections to Beijing, Guangzhou and other major cities are available as well as daily connections to Kashgar. Some international flights (not all daily) to Moscow and Islamabad are also available.
Urumqi is linked by rail to six major Chinese cities, including Xian, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Lanzhou. The train station is in the southwest part of the city. 
The best way to get around in Xinjiang is by bus as the highway system is relatively complete. The Urumqi bus station is a few blocks northeast of the train station.
6.Climate
Urumpi is with continental steppe climate. In summer,it is hot and dry,the average temperature July 24°C.In winter is damp and cold,the average temperature January -16°C. The annual average temperature amounts to 5.4°C, the yearly precipitation is about 273 mm.

7. Attractions

Heavenly Lake
In the middle of Bogda Peak, 110 km east of Urumqi, nestles Heavenly Lake. Covering 4.9 square kilometers, this crescent-shaped lake deserves its name, Pearl of Heavenly Mountain. With melted snow as its source, Heavenly Lake enjoys crystal water.
In summer, the beautiful lake is an ideal cool resort. Boaters on the lake see the ever-changing silvery mountains soaring into the blue sky.Heavenly Lake, a relic of the Quaternary Period Glacier and its surrounding geological relics, offers science lovers exploring opportunities.
Xin Jiang Regional Museum
Situated in Xibei Lu, in Urumqi City, the Xinjiang Regional Museum is a large integrated museum and centre for the collection and study of cultural relics in Xinjiang.
The museum, which was built in 1953, is in a Uigur style, the internal decor having strong ethnic features.
The 'Loulan beauty' is among the best preserved and famous ones in the museum. The 'Loulan beauty' has a reddish brown skin, thick eyelashes, charming large eyes, and long hair. This particular 'charming' corpse has survived for an estimated 4,000 years.
Red Hill 
Red Hill is a symbol of Urumqi, owing to its uniqueness. The body of the mountain, made up of aubergine rock, has a reddish brown color, hence, the name Red Hill. The hill is 1.5km long and 1km wide from east to west. Red Hill has been developed into the Red Hill Park. Modern entertainment facilities and ethnic performances bring a fresh and lively atmosphere to the park.
